On August 15 - In the 2008 Olympics in Beijing, China - Shalane finished 3rd in the Womens 10k Finals, earning a Bronze medal. Shalane also broke her own American Record in the 10k, with a time of 30:22.22, shattering her own previous American Record of 30:34.49. It was only the second medal earned all-time for the US in the Womens 10k at the Olympics.
